After 5 films, 3 directors, 2 lead actors and a reboot all in the past 13 years Marvel and Sony have decided we need MOAR!!!! MOAR SPIDER-MAN!!!!!! MOAR REBOOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! And with all that comes one more thing – MOAR NEW ACTORS and DIRECTORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Having reached an agreement earlier in the year to bring the Spider-Man franchise back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), albeit as a co-production with the studio to whom they had originally sold the rights back in 1999, Sony Picture, the comic-book leviathan has today announced it has found the next young actor to don the spidey-suit. Tom Holland, a veteran of a mere 7 films, one tv show and a stage musical, will be the first teen to portray the arachnid superhero at just 19 years old. While I have yet to experience his work first-hand and I can only hope Holland manages to be less whiny than his predecessors which, to be honest, would not be very difficult!
The studio also announced the film’s director as 12 film veteran, Jon Watts. Marvel believes Watts is a good fit for their policy of “finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life” as they believe they did with other MCU directors James Gunn, the Russo brothers and Joss Whedon.
There are currently no writers formerly attached to to the project, but Sony and Marvel apparently want to “collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger”, whatever that means – I hope it didn’t mean another whole film dedicated to the origins story.
The first joint Spider-man film is currently scheduled for release on 28 July 2017, but if current rumours and reckless speculation are to be believed, you should be able to a spidey-cameo in Captain American: Civil War scheduled for May next year.
